[5/5]Similarity in Music and Math

The patterns that exist between math, language, and music have prompted numerous studies to be commissioned to establish their inter- relationship. We all know that music is a series of notes that are played in accordance to a pattern and maths too works in a similar way. In maths to result always remains finite despite the various ways in which you can add, multiply, subtract, and divide numbers.

Music too works in a similar fashion and pattern. There is an endless variety of groupings between notes, but the number of notes and sounds that exist is finite. Music and math similar to each other owing to the similarity in patterns and combinations. The processing of data about music and maths by our brain is diverse when compared to any other data or inputs.

Babies are attracted to the spoken work when it sounds rhythmic and melodic. Talk to a baby in a normal tone of voice and then change your words to a nursery rhyme that has melodic and bold sounding words throughout. You may find that the baby pays more attention to you when you are saying words that have a poetic, mathematical stride to them much more than when your words are mundane and spoken in a normal tone of voice.

Small children love to listen to music that with repetitive patterns to it. Perhaps this is because their brain is computing the music message in way that catches their interest and makes them think. Hopefully, as a result children learning different methods to think, they are more willing to learn and absorb.

Many young children start by making their own music, usually with anything they can get their hands on. As you listen to the sounds that they are making you will discern some kind of a pattern emerging. It is this ability to establish patterns out of random sounds that determines how well the child will do at math skills later in life.

During a child’s growth, it’s important to have music as a part of their life. Studies show that children who are active in music, whether as a result of playing an instrument or listening to a wide variety of music, perform better in math. The studies indicate that this is a result of their brains developing in such a way that they are able to discern patterns and repetition among the musical notes.

The art of calculation lies in understanding the pattern. When you follow a pattern, it shall take you to a conclusion. The key lies in knowing the pattern, be it a simple or a complex pattern, it needs to be followed for the same conclusion.

The inter-relationship between maths and music works both ways. Children who are good in maths are also competent when they take up music. Music may be in the form of playing an instrument or reading musical notes. Therefore, a combination of these two skills leads to better overall performance in school and better learning and skills.

The music also seems to have benefits that include everything from learning of language to improving math skills. Putting music into our lives from an early age, such as birth onwards, seem to give an advantage that can’t be disputed. More and more studies confirm that there truly is a connection between music and math.

[5/4]Thinking of Going Back to School? Education Options for Busy Moms

Copyright 2006 Pat Brill

If you’ve been thinking about going back to school, you’ll be happy to know that you have more options than you realize. Colleges and other schools recognize that adult students have different needs from traditional students and are responding with evening classes and online courses that make it possible for even the busiest mom on the block to earn a degree or certification in an ever-growing variety of disciplines.

Some of the options to consider when deciding about going back to school are:

• Two-year colleges
• Vocational schools
• Technical colleges
• Local universities
• Online colleges and universities
• Correspondence courses
• Distance learning programs

In addition, there are interior design schools, art colleges, and culinary schools that you can choose from. These are a few of the many specialized schools and colleges out there where you can earn a certification or degree in the specific discipline you’re interested in.

Most local colleges, universities, and technical schools now offer classes in the evenings to make it easier for adult students to attend classes. Many of them offer online courses as well, so it’s possible for you to attend classes and earn a degree from them without ever setting foot in a classroom.

“Virtual” schools are one of the hottest trends going for moms who want to go back to school, but are busy with jobs and families. These virtual schools, otherwise known as distance learning institutes and online universities, have gained amazing popularity in the last five years and are now recognized as legitimate sources for getting a college degree by some of their toughest critics.

One benefit of attending classes at a local college or technical school is that you get to take full advantage of the classroom setting. You’ll have peers to turn to for advice, and even homework assignment help. This student community can be very good for you if you haven’t set foot in a classroom for many years, as you won’t feel isolated and alone in your scholastic pursuits.

However, online colleges offer you the advantage of being able to attend classes whenever it suits your schedule. They’re also quite flexible in allowing you as much time or as little as you need to turn in assignments and meet the course requirements. This allows you to finish up a certification program or earn a degree much more quickly than you can in a traditional school setting, where the quarter or semester system is rigidly enforced.

To find the best back-to-school option for you, check out the web. You can research a multitude of distance learning programs to find one that offers a degree or certification for exactly the profession you want. You can also find out everything you need to know about your local colleges and universities online. Most have their own informative websites. So if you’re thinking about going back to school, don’t waste another second. Hit the Superhighway and start doing your homework—it’ll be excellent practice for when you do become a student.

[5/3]Online degrees - specially suited to adults looking to improve their employment prospects

No longer is a university degree only available by physically attending university lectures, seminars and tutorials. Now you can work for your degree 100% online, never setting foot into the hallowed halls of learning unless you choose to.

There are universities that offer Bachelors and Masters degrees online. You can even get a Doctorate 100% online. You have a very wide choice of subject, as wide as if you physically attended the institution.

The online degree has the advantage that you can work at it in between your parenting or other commitments. You can keep up the day job, while studying for your degree in the evenings or at weekends. This option is a really attractive one for adults looking to increase their long-term employment options.

You can get an Online degree from many traditional universities, including Harvard and Yale. There are other universities and colleges that only have online courses. Some of these universities are accredited universities, others are not.

If you apply to a non-accredited institution future employers are unlikely to look favorably on your qualification. This is because some of these non-accredited "universities" are nothing more than printing shops, churning out degrees as the cheques roll in. Everyone has seen the ads for these so-called degrees - "The Get your doctorate next week" type ads.

There have been cases of prominent scientists losing their posts because their degree was exposed to come from one of these non-accredited institutions that produce totally worthless degrees and doctorates.

There are "Life-Experience" degrees where you gain credit for what you have learned in your job over the years, including for experience gained by staying at home and looking after the kids. Treat these especially with extreme caution and don't shell out your money too easily. If it's that easy to get a degree then it really is not worth the paper it is printed on.

[5/2]Are You Too Old To Go Back To School?

You want to go back to school and continue your education. Perhaps you'd like to earn your first degree or ou'd like to earn a new degree in a different field. You've been dreaming of that degree but haven't dared believe your dream can come true because you think you are too old.

You aren't. It really is that simple. I don't care what your age is, as an experienced college-level educator I can assure you that you are not too old, because there are many nontraditional students on college campuses today (and likely some of those are older than you are), your life experience gives you many advantages over more traditional students, and with the growing nontraditional population many colleges have programs and services especially tailored for the nontraditional student.

I went back to school in my 30s and today I teach college. Yes, I have many traditional students in my classroom but every semester I have a large percentage of nontraditional students as well. I have studens in their late 20s as well as 30s, 40s, 50s, and up. I have students who have retired from one career and are looking to move into another. I have students whose children (or grandchildren) have left the nest so they are looking to enter a new stage in their life.

I also have many students balancing school with work and family. I have students who are the traditional age but are in nontraditional circumstances including children and family, work and military service, as well as sports and other activities. You are a unique person, but your situation is not as unique as you might think.

In many ways, your age, or rather your life experience, will be a tremendous asset for your return to school. Nontraditional students understand much better than traditional students how to manage their time and prioritize tasks. In addition, nontraditional students are often much more motivated and goal-oriented than their more traditional counterparts. Finally, your life experience also gives you a great deal of knowledge and experience to fall back on or pull from when it comes to understanding, applying, or adapting the new knowledge you gain through college. I regularly see my nontraditional students outperform traditional students in many ways, but it ultimately comes down to a maturity of thinking and reasoning that can only come with growing up. I know when I returned to college as a student after working for a number of years that I did much better in the classroom and also handled my work load much better than I did when I was a more traditional student.

Today colleges recognize they have a changing student population and offer classes in a variety of formats including on campus, off campus, televised, and internet as well as a range of schedules including days, nights, weekends, and accelerated. In addition, there are now support services available for students who fall outside the traditional student role. Many financial aid and scholarship programs also exist specifically for the nontraditional student.

In the end, it really comes down to your own gut feeling. Do you really want that degree? Are you ready to change your life? You can do it and there will be help and support available for you. Don't use your age as an excuse not to pursue your dream.
